Charity Quiz raises £2,300 for Epilepsy Research UK in support of colleague who lost son to Epilepsy

A Charity Committee made up of staff from Grimsby and Louth branches of Bridge McFarland Solicitors has raised over £2,300 for Epilepsy Research UK by hosting a Halloween themed Quiz in Grimsby.

The event was held at the Humber Royal Hotel in Grimsby on the 26th October. Over 120 guests were greeted on the night by staff wearing Halloween costumes, spooky decorations, fish and chips, and the witty repartee of ‘Lincs FM’ DJ, John Marshall who acted as host for the evening.

As well as the quiz itself, the night also saw a luxury raffle and several entertaining games including ‘Guess the name of the witch’s cat’ and ‘How many sweets in the jar?’. The Committee chose to support Epilepsy Research UK following Rachel, a lawyer in the Louth Office, losing her son earlier in the year to epilepsy.

Rachel’s son Robert, a computer science student, died on 7 January 2017 at home in Scartho, Grimsby, as his family were planning to take him back to De Montfort University in Leicester after the Christmas and New Year break.

Devastation at losing her only child has turned into determination for Rachel, a clinical negligence lawyer at Bridge McFarland’s office in Louth.

Fundraising was started by one of Robert’s best friends, Jonathan Brooke, who set up a JustGiving page in his memory, and this continued at Robert’s wake. Rachel took part in a tandem sky dive challenge with colleagues over the summer, raising a further £4,000 for the charity.

Rachel estimates that with the JustGiving Page set up by Rob’s friend, the skydive, quiz and other initiatives within the offices the fundraising total for Epilepsy Research UK will be in the region of £8,000 (before gift aid).

The Charity Committee worked very hard to make the quiz a success, and they would like to give special mention to the local businesses who were kind enough to donate raffle prizes for the Quiz; The Wheatsheaf, Jackson Green & Preston, Burtons of Louth, Kevin Ferriby, Courtyard Barn, Clydesdale Bank, Rose & Crown Scartho, Office Team, Hall Farm, Rock Up Hull, Old Farm Spa Harby, Caxton Theatre, NatWest Bank, Forrester Boyd and Woburn Safari Park
