BE SEPSIS SAVVY!

Bridge McFarland LLP supports the UK Sepsis Trust in its new campaign to raise awareness of the dangers of sepsis generally but also within the educational setting. They are asking people to be “Sepsis Savvy. Spot the Signs. Save lives”.

As a firm we support any attempts to raise awareness of the signs of sepsis and stop it in its tracks before serious, irreversible harm is done.

Sepsis is the body’s life threatening response to a source of infection, which could be from a bacteria, a virus, a fungus etc. Normally your body’s immune system fights infections but in Sepsis the body attacks itself.

Sepsis requires urgent emergency care, generally by way of intravenous antibiotics and close monitoring in a hospital setting.   Sadly, if sepsis is left to develop a person can enter septic shock, lose limbs, develop post sepsis syndrome or at the most extreme, lose their life.

We have a lot of expertise of clinical negligence cases involving Sepsis.  Our Partner and Clinician Negligence lawyer Nicola Evans last wrote about Sepsis in September 2021 during Sepsis Awareness Month to outline our experience in such tragic cases.  https://www.bridgemcfarland.co.uk/news/what-is-sepsis

In that article we outlined the main signs of Sepsis and remind you that these can be any number of symptoms such as :

 Slurred speech or confusion

 Extreme shivering or muscle pains

Passing no urine in one day

 Severe breathlessness

It feels like you are going to die

 Skin is mottled or discoloured

A child may also exhibit signs by having a fit, developing a rash, not feeding and/or feeling abnormally cold.

Of course, we all now know about the significant risks presented to us by COVID-19, but did you know that COVID-19 can also trigger Sepsis?

The UK Sepsis Trust provide a wealth of information, guidance and support to those affected by sepsis.  Their current campaign #sepsissavvy provides free resources including a short video to educate on the early warning signs that could help you save a loved ones life.

A recent campaign in education has seen its 200th school register for sepsis awareness lesson plans.   The clinical negligence team here at Bridge McFarland LLP applaud the work done by the Sepsis Trust and all those who fundraise for the charity to enable this investment in education to help the next generation be prepared and spot the signs of sepsis to save lives.

Do you have young children in school?  If so ask your school about signing up to the free educational resources available to help spread the word.
