Campaigning for safer working conditions after reports of farm accidents caused by vehicles

The FSP has set itself a target of helping to reduce the numbers of farm fatalities by half, by the end of 2023.

At the beginning of 2019, the Farm Safety Partnership (FSP), launched a new safety initiative. This carried the social media hashtag #DriveSafetyForward and will run throughout the year.

The initiative aims to coordinate health and safety messages across the industry by looking at specific actions in each of the four farming seasons and promoting good practice in those areas.

The themes for 2019 were set out as being;

  • Transport and machinery: January – March
  • Handling livestock: April – June
  • Child safety on the farm: July – September
  • Working at height: October – December

The NFU vice president and Chairman of the Farm Safety Partnership, Stuart Roberts, on announcing the launch of the campaign said;

“With the partnership delivering a co-ordinated campaign and looking at specific actions each season, we can focus our approach on changing behaviours.
I would urge all farmers and industry workers to support this incredibly important campaign which will work towards driving safety forward, saving lives and making our industry the best it can be.”

The FSP has set itself a target of helping to reduce the numbers of farm fatalities by half, by the end of 2023.

The FSP is to be commended for their efforts. By giving itself several years to hit its targets, it is to be hoped that not only will accident statistics be improved but attitudes will change and a more robust approach to health and safety in the farming world will become the norm as well.
