Former managing partner marks law career milestone with retirement
“ General practice was the norm for many years in provincial practices before solicitors began to specialise. The transformation of IT and marketing brought further change. ”

A former managing partner of leading law firm Bridge McFarland Solicitors is to retire after 40 years as a qualified solicitor.

Robert Edwards joined Bridge McFarland in 1999 as a result of a merger with the Grimsby firm Granville Chapman.

He was a partner until 2009 when he stepped up to the role of managing partner, holding the post for five years and then continuing as a consultant. Robert began his legal career in Bristol and, after qualifying in 1977, became very well known in the Grimsby area for his work in general legal services , before specialising in commercial property and private client matters.

The nature of the workload is just one aspect of the profession which has changed over the years. He said: “General practice was the norm for many years in provincial practices before solicitors began to specialise. The transformation of IT and marketing brought further change – the times of sending everything by post and not being allowed to advertise are long gone.

“Now law firms have huge IT and marketing budgets, creating a much more competitive environment and supporting a wide range of specialist services.”

Robert worked closely with his good friend the late John Bridge, a founding member of Bridge McFarland who passed away in 2006.

As managing partner, Robert led the development of the firm during a period of turbulent market conditions during the recession.

In his retirement he wants to use the greater free time he will have to travel and at some stage to re-visit Australia, where he was born. He enjoys motorcycle touring which takes him to interesting and out-of-the-way places. He is keen on tennis, cycling and walking, and is going to try to learn to play golf. He will also have more time to visit his daughters who are living in Dorset and London.
