Law Firm Celebrates Record Year for Charity

A regional law firm based in Lincolnshire and North Yorkshire is celebrating a successful year of charity fundraising. Staff set out an initial fundraising target of £13,000, but thanks to a great deal of hard work this target has been exceeded with a record breaking £20,045 donated to charity in their financial year running May 2017 - April 2018.

The staff at Bridge McFarland Solicitors select different charities to support at the beginning of May each year, over the past 12 months they have been supporting Epilepsy Research UK, The Alzheimer’s Society and Abbie’s Fund. While the firm support a range of charities and community groups every year, the ‘charity of the year’ fundraising is fully staff-led with Charity Committee’s operating from their different offices.

The team in Hull supported local charity Abbie’s Fund this year. They have raised £7,051.55 for the charity through a luxury charity ball, sponsored challenges and bake sales. The charity supports families who have suffered the loss of a baby.

Abbie’s Fund use their proceeds to provide memory boxes for the Maternity Unit at Hull Royal Infirmary’s Women and Children’s Hospital, something that brings comfort to families at a very painful time. The charity was also involved in the recruitment of a Bereavement Midwife at Hull Women & Children’s Hospital and they continue to pay a percentage of the salary to enable the post to be full time rather than part time.

Katy Cowell who established Abbie’s Fund has thanked the team for their support “Abbie’s Fund have had a fantastic year as Bridge McFarland’s chosen charity, and it has been a real pleasure working in partnership with them raising both money and awareness for our charity. Their support and drive has been amazing. We are so grateful to the Bridge McFarland charity committee for organising and hosting such an amazing event and for all their support throughout the past year.

The teams in Louth and Grimsby have raised over £8,275 for Epilepsy Research UK - £4,000 of which was raised by three staff members bravely taking on a tandem skydiving challenge. Over £2,300 of the total was raised at a Halloween charity quiz night the committee held at The Humber Royal in October 2017. The Committee chose to support Epilepsy Research UK following Rachel, a lawyer in the Louth Office, losing her son Rob earlier in 2017 to epilepsy. The monies raised will go towards helping Epilepsy Research UK find out more about epilepsy and SUDEP – Sudden Unexpected (Unexplained) Death in Epilepsy.

Shona Scott, Fundraising Manager at Epilepsy Research UK said “Thank you so much for the fantastic fundraising undertaken by Bridge McFarland to support Rachel Abba and the work of Epilepsy Research UK. Your forthcoming donation, together with monies already received are making a truly significant contribution to research funding. Our thanks go to all involved for such wonderful support of our research”.

In Lincoln and Market Rasen the teams were fundraising for Alzheimer’s Society, with monies raised totalling £3,481. This was achieved through a series of sponsored challenges, bake sales and a luxury raffle draw that saw prizes including Eurostar and West End theatre tickets being dished out. The team had initially set themselves a £3,000 target and were thrilled to have exceeded that amount.

Olly Larkin, Community Fundraiser for Alzheimer’s Society in the East Midlands said: “We’re so grateful to Bridge McFarland for uniting against dementia by supporting Alzheimer’s Society. Dementia is set to be the 21st century’s biggest killer, with someone developing it every three minutes. All the money raised by the Lincoln and Market Rasen teams will provide information and support, improve care, fund research, and create lasting change for people affected by dementia.”

As well as their ‘Charity of the Year’ fundraising, Lincoln staff also raised nearly £1,000 for St Barnabas Hospice by taking part in a Colour Dash event in May 2017, The Grimsby office also raised £300 for ZEBEDEE and the NELPPF when they took part in the Cleethorpes Colour Run.

Practice Manager Adele Collis describes the moment the fundraising totals were revealed “We are delighted, it’s an incredible achievement and such a testament to our dedicated staff – they have been incredible over the last year. Being on a charity committee is a lot of responsibility; I think we can all be really proud”.

“Of course this puts a lot of pressure on next year’s committees – we are going to really have to dig deep if we want to improve on that figure next year!”

Stephen Lambert, Senior Partner at Bridge McFarland, passed on his thanks to staff on behalf of the whole partnership “What excellent people we have here, and how hard they work. It makes me very proud to see how my colleagues have risen to the occasion to support these worthy causes – I’m sure I speak for the whole partnership when I thank them for everything they have done”.

In the next week staff at Bridge McFarland will vote for which charities they will be supporting in their new financial year (May 2018 – April 2019). With 18 different charities nominated it is certainly going to be an interesting week.

The nominated charities include LIVES, When You Wish Upon a Star, The Cystic Fibrosis Trust, and The Notts &Lincs Air Ambulance. The new Bridge McFarland ‘Charity of the Year’ for each office will be announced in May 2018. The staff are feeling very energised by their success and look forward to trying to beat this total over the next 12 months.
